2. Hoodia: An herbal appetite suppressant, supplement makers have recently been trying to extract the main active chemical in this supplement, without major success. There is currently no evidence that it is effective or safe, and there is some evidence that supplements may not contain enough of the active ingredient to be effective anyway.

3. hCG: A pregnancy hormone, hCG is a prescription injection supplement that is often touted as an appetite suppressant in people who are on super low crash diets (less than 500 calories per day). Since there isn’t much evidence of its effectiveness, it is difficult to get a prescription for. Coupled with the extreme low diet that has to be accompanied by it, hCG weight loss is probably not practical for most people.

4. Green Tea: A healthy supplement to take due to its potential for lowering cholesterol, green tea is also sometimes marketed as a weight loss aid. Although it does safely increase metabolism (unlike ephedra), it probably isn’t a powerful enough effect to help increase dieting efforts.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar: This is also a good anti-cholesterol supplement, and so might be healthy for your cardiovascular system, but it also might help lower weight. Studies on humans have shown that it does help as a weight loss aid. Apple cider vinegar for weight loss might be a worthwhile addition to your diet. Diabetics should use caution, as it alters metabolism and might change insulin requirements. It also can weaken bones over time.
