Health Risks Of Breast Implants

For some women, the size and shape of their breasts matter a lot. That’s why breast augmentation is becoming more and more popular among women these days. Even if the cost of a boob job is high, there are still thousands of women who submit to this kind of expensive procedure. According to CostFacts.com, a boob job ranges from $4,000 to $10,000 per procedure.

However, there are big problems associated with breast implants. There are a lot of risks that can threaten the health of women who receive implants, whether it is saline or silicone.

Breast Implant Issues

The surgery offers several risks to the patient, not considering yet the long-term implications of the presence of implants in the body. A breast augmentation can lead to complications such as infection, hemotoma, loss of nipple sensitivity, painfully sensitive nipples, and the like.

Capsular contracture can also happen. This is the tightening of the scar tissue around the implant resulting to a very hard and misshaped breast that can be mildly to severely painful. Moreover, implants can break and can cause all kinds of risks to the body. Saline implants can be a breeding ground of bacteria and mold that can cause diseases while silicone implants can be damaging to the lungs and other organs.

Cancers and Death

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)  have found out that 21 percent of women who have breast implants for seven years at least has greater risk of getting cancer as compared to women of the same age without implants. Some types of cancers related to breast implants include respiratory tract, brain, cervical, and vulvular cancers. A different study conducted by NCI had found out that women who have implants for at least 12 years are more likely to die from diseases like lung cancer, brain tumors, and respiratory diseases.

Other Concerns

The Institute of Medicine says that women with breast implant surgery are more likely to have an inadequate supply of milk for breastfeeding. This is without mentioning yet that the safety of their breast milk to a newborn baby is being questioned. This is true because women with breast implants are known to have increased levels of toxins in their blood brought by the platinum used in most breast implants.

Furthermore, breast implants can interfere with the efficiency of mammogram in women. Mammogram is an early detector of breast cancer in women, but with breast implants, it is less likely that the early detection of breast cancer will be a success.

If you are thinking of getting a boob job, understand all the risks in line with the procedure first. Even if you can totally afford the cost of the breast augmentation, weigh down the things you can take advantage of from the procedure as compared to the risks you can get from it.
