Who Wants to Diet – Try An HCG Diet Instead

Have you heard of this new fad diet a la Atkins and South Beach called HCG? Apparently you can lose a pound a day on this diet (which technically is not healthy, healthy weight loss consists of losing two pounds a week. Any more than that is considered not safe, and it has a history of coming back two fold.) by using the hcg shots and eating only 500 calories a day.

There is a lot of hype over HCG and in order to fully asses this diet treatments, I will compare it to Atkins, South Beach Diet, Master Cleanse and any other fad diets I think are worth mentioning/funny.

First lets start off with the reason we’re here: you’re wondering if you should buy HCG. HCG stands for Human chorionic gonadotropin and it is a hormone found in pregnant women. Apparently, it is really good for losing weight. On this diet, you need the HCG shots and also you only eat 500 calories a day. Put those two things together and you are bound to lose weight. The after effects? I’m not so sure. The HCG people do promise that you will lose only fat, and no muscle – but have there been studies done? Nope. So you just have to believe them for now.

The original purpose of the South Beach Diet was to prevent heart disease. In this diet, you learn how to recognize the difference between “good carbs” and “bad carbs” and “good fats” and “bad fats”. There are three phases and successively they get more liberal. There is no set of restricted foods or caloric amounts, it is supposed to be long lasting in the dieter because they are meant to learn for themselves what is good and what is bad for them. Seems reasonable enough. Studies were done that showed favorable results for the South Beach Diet.

Atkins Diet – this one is more controversial because it was a bigger fad than other diets. Many people speculated that this diet meant you could eat all the stake you want. False. This diet does not have caloric restrictions, but it does make you monitor your protein intake. Like South Beach, there are phases, except in Atkins there are four phases, induction, ongoing weight loss (OWL), pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance.

Master Cleanse – I know quite a few people who have tried this one, and frankly, it freaks me out. For ten days or so, you drink nothing but what they call “lemonade” which basically is water, some lemon juice and syrup. You can make this go on for as long as you like. Rumor has it that Beyonce was on the Master Cleanse for two months to lose weight for “Dream Girls”, which is ridiculous and scary! Also, it is not meant as a weight loss program, it is meant to detox and get all of the toxins out of your system. The Master Cleanse says you will get all of your energy back after you finish the cleanse, which seems pretty obvious because that is when you start eating real foods again.

The moral of the story? There will always be pros and cons to each diet, and it all depends on who you talk to and if they’re trying to sell you something. If you are vacillating between a few diets, talk to friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Look each over and decide what looks best for your lifestyle and pick something you believe you can actually stick to. Are hcg diet injections looking the best to you? Then go for it!
